I don't know much about programming but there has to be a way for the game to stop the clock if some major malfunction has occurred.

Er yeah which i dont want to happen either...
i'd rather the clock be stopped then some surprise like..."Oh you're in the top 25 and there's six hours left in the game...feeling good? Well...SIX MORE DAYS BUDDY ADDED TO THE CLOCK, good luck!"
Yeah we don't need that...just stop the clock and things would be much smoother.
